Imagine
a garden in the heart of rural Northamptonshire, which
looks as beautiful in mid-winter as it does in summer.
At the acclaimed Haddonstone showgardens in the village
of East Haddon, a plethora of stonework combines with
water and mature planting to create the perfect setting
– all year round.
A visit to the gardens is a must if customers wish to
see how fine ornaments can enhance a landscape. One of
the many strengths of the showgardens is that bright,
new Haddonstone sits in harmony with weathered pieces,
enabling the visitor to see how cast stone matures after
only a few years outside.
Haddonstone can be fully enjoyed in every season and
looks as stunning covered with snow or surrounded by autumn
leaves, as it does among the opulent colours of summer.
Set over different levels, the walled Manor House garden
features dozens of Haddonstone designs, from fountains
and statuary to urns, bird baths and sundials. Rather
than seeing one large landscape, the showgardens are divided
into numerous more intimate areas, each with its own theme.
After viewing Haddonstone’s collection of contemporary
ornaments, visitors reach the top lawn, where two classical
sphinxes recreated from original Coade designs flank a
magnificent orangery. Other architectural features in
the garden include columns, a pergola and balustrading
creating a dramatic backdrop to the swimming pool. There
is even an ancient orchard leading to a charming dovecote.
The Jubilee Garden, created to commemorate the company’s
silver anniversary in 1996, contains further architectural
features including a pavilion, temple and magical, ruinous
gothic folly, which appears to be centuries old.
A range of handcrafted wrought ironwork pieces from Haddoncraft
Forge can be found amongst the stonework. Designs include
benches, wall baskets and obelisks entwined with climbing
plants. There is also a showroom where a range of fireplaces
and other interior features can be viewed.
The gardens attract many visitors from around the world
every year, being just 75 miles from central London and
conveniently located to the M1, M6, M40 and A14. Most
reach the gardens by exiting the M1 at junction 18 before
travelling along the A428 in the direction of Northampton.
Brown tourism signs guide visitors from the A428 to the
gardens.
East
Haddon and surrounding villages offer a tempting array
of restaurants and country pubs for lunch and the area
is convenient for local points of interest such as Althorp,
Holdenby House and Coton Manor.
